The New York State Education Department (NYSED) surreptitiously scheduled 3 meetings to hear community concerns about the Common Core Learning Standards, high stakes testing and privacy concerns in New York City. The meetings were scheduled at the last minute (with only a week’s notice) and even then, parent groups found out about the meetings almost by accident. NYSED didn’t even notify local elected officials of their “community forums.” To date, no information has been made available about how to gain entry to the forums nor about how to ask questions.
We urge all NYC school parents to show up to one of the scheduled forums (schedule is below). But we also strongly recommend that you email State Education Commissioner John King and NYS Board of Regents Chancellor Merryl Tisch to express your displeasure at the fact that they gave us so little notice. They clearly are not eager to hear from NYC parents!
