VIDEO: Change the Stakes & Others Mourn Closed Schools

Members of communities hardest-hit by Mayor Bloomberg’s education policies gathered last week for a Halloween-themed Funeral of Schools, complete with caskets representing the more than 160+ schools closed and squeezed by undesired school co-locations. Students carried the caskets in a processional presided over by Fathers Michael Sniffen and Chris Ballard of the Church of St. Luke & St. Matthew in Clinton Hill, Brooklyn.

A coalition of groups – which included the Movement of Rank-and-File Educators (MORE) Caucus of the UFT, Change the Stakes, the Inwood Tigers Marching Band of IS 52  and  the Paul Robeson Freedom School – called on the next Mayor to implement an immediate moratorium on all school closures and co-locations, as well as the reversal of the latest batch of co-locations implemented in the 11th hour by the Bloomberg administration as they leave office.
