Change The Stakes stands in solidarity with Castle Bridge

This week parents at Castle Bridge Elementary school in Washington Heights  joined forces and organized a boycott of the standardized tests children as young as 5 years old were expected to take. Common Core Curriculum as well as its accompanying assessments have both been poorly constructed, confusing and developmentally inappropriate that undermine the validity of standardized scores and subsequent use in teacher evaluation. If we are to raise achievement of the older children, we must start by improving instruction in the early grades, but introducing misguided tests does not improve teaching and learning. The link to teacher evaluation represents yet another aspect of the tests  that further distort a quality education our children deserve.

Change The Stakes stands in solidarity with the parents and teachers of Castle Bridge in their fight against high-stakes and standardized testing that hinder children’s development and social-emotional growth. Change The Stakes supports more parents, teachers, and schools taking these brave actions to benefit public education that serves the public good.
