Why Opt Out?
Across New York City, NY State and across the nation, parents and educators are increasingly concerned about the effects of high-stakes testing. Testing has crowded out music, art, foreign language and even science to expand the time available for test prep. Opting your child out of state testing is a way to send a strong message to policymakers that excessive testing, with high stakes attached, is not in our children’s best interests.
Opting out is a strategy — it is not an end in and of itself. Opting out will not prevent our children’s education from being taken over by test prep. But it’s the best strategy parents have to disrupt the system!
The fact sheet below explains what you need to know about opting your child out of the state tests. Note that the formal language for opting out is “refusing the tests.” We also provide a sample letter you can fill out to inform your principal that your child will not be taking the tests.
